5 Great Ways for Moms to Get Out in #SanDiego

Being a mom doesn't mean that we can't get out and have fun anymore. It just means that we need to get a little creative to do so. Lucky for me, I live in a city filled with entertainment and a never-ending list of places to go and things to do.

Since my time away from the family is much valued but short lived, I need to make the most of it and really create great memories to hold me over until the next time I get out. Here are a few ways I like to enjoy my time away from the kids and family while enjoying the city I live in.

1. Happy Hour -
Now happy hour is not the same as it was pre-kids. No longer are we heading to an upscale bar after work for a few drinks, appetizers, and some girl time. Happy Hour has now become any time the girls get together at a place with food without the kids.

Drinks may or may not happen but all we know is that we're eating a whole meal without having to feed another being. We also will be able to eat our meal while it's still hot and won't have to worry about asking for it to-go because of a tantrum. Meals away from the family means chit chat and girl time at its best... un-filtered!

2. Networking in Disguise -
One of the best things about my life as a mom is the fact that I get to hang out with other cool moms all the time. And sometimes we get to network with each other finding out that we might be able to help each other more than we thought!

And one event that brings moms together to do just that are the SD Mom's Night Out events. They are an absolutely amazing way to relax, reconnect, and network with other moms in San Diego who you might not have known about. From Momtrepreneurs to bloggers to stay-at-home-moms looking for a great way to get out and explore. Each event is different and has something else to offer.

The next event is their one year anniversary and it isn't to be missed! Not only is it being held at Kin Spa, it also includes some amazing perks and goodies! To read more about the SD Mom's Night Out Anniversary Event, check out my post here.

3. My Favorite Things -
Every few months my mom friends and I get together for what we call a My Favorite Things party. We each bring 5 $6 items that we've dubbed as our favorite thing and we pass them out to each other (drawing names to choose who gets what). We eat and drink our favorite things too!

I love this type of event because it's low maintenance and it's a way to learn about things I might not have known about in daily conversations with my friends.  Our last Favorite Things party focused on our favorite kid items. And as you can imagine it was pretty hard to chose one item for $6 or less to share. But I was amazed again at the products that were shared and have fallen in love with a few new awesome things!

4. Playdates -
Yes, I know. This technically is not getting away from the kids but my friends are awesome. And when we get together, we are able to mingle and chat while our kids play around us. Most of the time I'll host playdates at my home and just rope the kids off into certain parts of the house and yard. That way the moms can sit in one central location and chat without having to worry about what trouble our kids are getting into.

This option does require a little bit of work but the reward is much worth it. Not only do we each get to sit and enjoy adult conversations, we also get to tire our kids out so that when we do go home they (hopefully) take nice, long naps. Win-win!

5. Shopping -
Whether it's for groceries or for clothes... shopping alone is always considered a great way to get out in my book. Not only do I get to enjoy some peace and quiet, I get to participate in one of my favorite activities... spending money!

While I love time with my kids, I don't love having to worry about my kids breaking everything within reach while we're out and about. I've learned that I'm a lot less stressed when I can go to a store alone and actually consider it relaxing to shop knowing that my kids are elsewhere having fun and not asking if they can have every.single.thing they see at the store.

What do you do for your mom-time without the kids?

Mia Francesca {A Family-Friendly San Diego Restaurant Review}

Having two small kids can prove to be quite a feat when it comes to dining out. Not only do we have to be very choosy about where we go, we also have to make sure thatthe items on the menu are "kid-friendly." And by kid friendly I do not mean breaded chicken nuggets and quesadillas (not that there is anything wrong with a good quesadilla). I mean something that will actually appeal to my children, whether it be what I order and share with them or what I order for them to eat together.

This afternoon we were invited to head over to Mia Francesca's newest Del Mar Highlands location to taste a bit of what they had to offer. And boy was I glad we went!

Not only is their menu simple and fabulous, everything I tasted was delicious as well! We started out with a few appetizers for the table. There were two types of bruscetta, the first was topped with bruscetta, fresh mozzarella (like... made recently fresh!), and avocado, the other was sans avocado but loaded with cheese! Both were topped with fresh basil. So good!

Next we tried the calamari. Now calamari has been one of my favorite dishes for quite some time. Not only is it delicious, but paired with a tangy marinara it just hits the spot. My son has never had calamari but when I offered him some he quickly approved and gobbled down a few pieces. So happy he enjoyed it!

After allowing our tummies to settle from our tasty appetizers, we were brought our main dishes.

I absolutely loved the kids options. Simple and, for the most part, healthy as well! I ordered pasta with broccoli for my daughter and chicken with fries for my son, knowing he'd share some of his sisters broccoli. Both shared wonderfully with each other.

The one thing I did love was that the chicken I ordered for him was not breaded tenders. It was a full grilled chicken breast perfectly seasoned. I cut it up and he devoured what I offered him. The servings were large and I could probably get away with letting the kids split a meal next time but for now we have left overs for the week!

After being undecided for quite a while about what I was going to get I decided to go with the pizza of the day. As soon as I saw fontina cheese I knew I had a winner. A simple margharita pizza with pesto sauce made my day. Sometimes a slice or two of pizza just puts you in a good mood!

The other pizzas they had ot offer also sounded yummy as well and I know my husband will want to come with us to try a few more of the menu options later on.

While this location is a bit out of the way for us, I'm looking forward to trying out the Little Italy location closer to home. And coming back to the Del Mar Highlands location when meeting up with  my family in North County. But for the 25 minute drive, lunch was totally worth it! Both locations can be found on their website here.

If you're looking for a family-friendly restaurant with a great, relaxing atmosphere you have to check out Mia Francesca. The patio is the perfect place on a warm day to let the kids play a bit while enjoying a great Italian meal with friends and family.

You can find Mia Francesca Del Mar on Facebook and Twitter.

True Food Kitchen: Delicious Food and Kid-Friendly Atmosphere {San Diego Restaurants}

Move over Nordies Cafe, I think I've found my new lunch spot at the Fashion Valley Mall.

True Food Kitchen, the brainchild of Dr. Andrew Weil, is a new restaurant chain that follows the principals of Dr. Andrew Weil’s Anti-Inflammatory Diet & Food Pyramid. It's health conscious meets eco-friendly and the results are amazing and tasty food!

When we arrived we were greeted with a wide open room filled with smiling faces, both the diners already seated and the staff at the restaurant seemed excited to be there. And while we didn't have to wait at all we noticed the cucumber basil water offered to guests who might not get seated right away. I'm pretty sure we'll be enjoying this yummy water soon when we return with my husband because this restaurant is going to be packed in no time!

I requested a booth to help corral the kids and make it easier for them to enjoy their meals without having to resort to using high chairs and was seated in a perfect corner booth that gave the kids both room to play a bit and eat their food.

I was excited to try a few different things on the menu but first my son had a specific request. As soon as the waitress asked us if we needed anything he ordered orange slices. No looking on the menu, no checking to see if they actually had orange slices available. He had a craving for orange slices and wanted some to start his meal.

I was so pleased when I heard the hostess say that grabbing orange slices and quickly realized how easy it was to meet the demands of a stubborn 3 year old. They had fresh, organic produce ready and available to serve for every meal and even offered fresh squeezed juices and cocktails. A chef easily sliced up an orange and had it over to my impatient son in no time.

When a restaurant caters to my 3 year old like True Food Kitchen did, it makes me want to come back again and again and invite friends and family along with me.

We ordered a starter of shrimp pot stickers (my favorite!) since Daddy wasn't there to veto the spicy dish and asked for a few minutes to decide on what we wanted as our main course. I was excited about the menu options and honestly wish I could have chosen more than one dish. Luckily this location is super close to the house and in the mall so I can come back and enjoy more yummy meals in the near future.

I finally decided on what we would have and settled on a Teriyaki Brown Rice Bowl to split between myself and my daughter and ordered a Almond Butter, Banana, and Strawberry sandwich with carrots for my son. He actually ordered for himself for the first time. I was so proud.

To check out the other selections for lunch time check out their lunch menu here

When the food arrived at our table it took all the willpower I had not to dig in right away without taking pictures. But I couldn't stop my son for grabbing a carrot stick and biting before I snapped a shot.

The three sticks they gave him were gone in no time and as soon as the waitress came around again he quickly asked for more carrots before I could stop him. This time they brought out a whole plate of whole, organic carrots in various shades of orange and purple for him to gnaw on. He was in heaven!

Once we finished our meal we were given the dessert menu. It was so hard to choose but we finally decided on a flourless chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. I requested the ice cream on the side so the kids could dive in on their own.

Little did I know that my daughter would take "diving in" to a new, literal level.

She wanted nothing to do with the ice cream and instead enjoyed the chocolate cake with Mommy. She has such a sweet tooth!

From the atmosphere, open and relaxed, to the food, organic and sustainable, to the amazing service I can definitely say that we will be coming back to True Food soon. And while the pricing is a tad higher than what we normally pay, we'd gladly shell out a bit more for their food.

If you're in San Diego and looking for a fun, kid-friendly, delicious place to eat head on over to Fashion Valley and check out True Food. You won't be disappointed!

What tasty options would you want to try for lunch from True Food?

Slater's 50/50 Restaurant Review {@Slaters5050 Review}

A few months ago a new restaurant opened up close to my home. As soon as I found out what their name meant I knew our family would love to try it out. Slater's 50/50 is a burger joint famous for their 50% beef and 50% ground bacon burgers. You heard me right. Ground bacon. In a burger. How much better can it get?

Well... it can get better! I made my own burger and called it the Simmworks Special. I selected the 50/50 burger and added brie, 50/50 sauce, grilled onions, and onions & tomatoes. When it came out my jaw dropped.

Oh my word was this a lot of burger!

Not only was the burger packed with flavor but it was perfectly cooked.

Along with my burger I ordered half sweet potato fries and half fried pickles. The fries came with this amazingly delicious pumpkin dipping sauce. I still dream about that sauce. Mmmm...

The fried pickles were exactly as I imagined and cooked to dill perfection. Paired with a mustard sauce they were the definition of comfort food.

I was waay too full to partake in the dessert offerings but was impressed with their tasty sounding dishes including a bacon brownie. I plan on returning just to indulge in this bad boy.

Since trying out Slater's 50/50 San Diego I've been back again twice to bring friends and family over to try their delicious burgers. Most recently I took my mother-in-law. I ordered the sliders for my son and I to share and she ordered the pastrami. It was as big as my daughter's head and very tasty.

Slater's is a burger place that I know will satisfy my craving and has proven to have excellent service, quality and selection.

Check Slater's 50/50 out on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to keep up with the latest. And make sure to check out their menu. You're sure to find a tasty treat that will take care of any craving you might have.

A Night Out on the Town {@Searsucker Review}

Vary rarely do my husband and I get to go out to a restaurant with an award winning chef and just go wild. We usually plan out the meal in advance and share our salads and sides so we can save money. And I usually say no to a glass of wine because one glass at a restaurant is usually the same as one bottle at home. But the Saturday after Valentine's Day we had the pleasure of going to Searsucker in Downtown San Diego and had no limits. It was amazing!

To read my full review of our meal and the restaurant please check out my article on Date Night 411.

Spaphile presents Wine & Spa at Fifty Seven Degrees

A few weeks ago my friend, Joann, sent me an invite to a Wine and Spa event. As soon as I saw these two words together I knew I wanted to go. Then she mentioned that I would also have a chance to meet some wonderful ladies she knew and I RSVPed right away. You see I'm finally starting to realize how important it is to network and get my name out there.

Yes, my blog is a personal family blog but I also like to have input and comments when I have a question or need help with a solution to a parenting (or life) problem. I have known for a while that while I or one of my friends might not know the answer there are a LOT of people out there who may. Plus I also want to learn more about blogging, networking and branding so that I can improve my blogging skills not only for this blog and my food blog but for the blog I run for my husband's cousin.

You see, I really like this blogging thing. I LOVE to get out and socialize and "getting out" doesn't always mean getting in the car and driving to meet people. I can stay home with the kids and still play with my friends at the same time. So with all that being said I was very excited to attend this Spaphile event at 57 Degrees wine bar. I made plans to leave the kids with Grandma since the hubs was at Comic Con, threw on some chap stick and headed out to have some fun.

The lovely Heather of Baby Bump & Beyond - Photo Courtesy of Laura Lohr
When I first got to the event I checked my email first and found out that Joann would have to miss the event. Ok... now what do I do. I was on my own for a bit. So I made the most of it and grabbed a glass of wine and then signed up for all of the mini-services being offered. Let me tell you I was very excited to have a few of these things done. Not only did they have one masseuse chair, they had two. And I could sign up for a chair massage at both! So that's what I did.

Stephanie Lee of Stephanie Lee Massage was there and not only did she do a wonderful chair massage, she also scented the cover she used for the face pillow so the whole time I was being massaged I would breathe in these wonderful scents. Oh it was heaven in 5 minutes! Definitely something this tired mama needed to keep her going! The glass of wine might have helped with the relaxation too but we'll talk about that later...

After my first massage I got a facial cleanse from ASerenity and an eye treatment. Basically they take a rotating brush with some cleanser and the brush moves around your face allowing for a deeper penetration of the product. And the eye cream made me feel fresh and hydrated. They even gave me a sample of the cleanser (Vital C by Image Skincare) to try at home. How awesome is that?

Once my face was all hydrated and the kinks in my neck were taken care of I made my way over to The Beauty Bar's booth for some hair care. When asked by Desiree what I was looking for I said to do anything. And she turned my hair into a gorgeous updo of curls and tangles. I think it took her all of 15 minutes to make me look even better than I did on my wedding day. I really want to go back and get my hair done for some fun special occasion whenever should occasion come about. I'm hoping to have some good pictures of the back of my hair soon :)

After I got my hair done it was time for some mingling. I had seen another mama friend I met at Signs class and went to find her. After a bit of talking we decided to grab another glass of wine. This is where the fun began. When we went up to the bar to order there was hardly any room to squeeze in and grab a bartender. So we had to lean in a bit and talk in between two people (they weren't together, there was a chair empty in between them). I asked to order a glass of the wine I had before and he immediately asked for all of our IDs. Not a problem, we all got them out and showed him we were well above the legal limit. Then I told him what I wanted again and he replied back that they were all out of it but were subbing something else. Fine, we'd go with that. We're easy.

And then the woman next to us made some snide comment about us watching our volume (later I found out she was just playing words with friends on her phone... why be so rude when we weren't even interrupting a conversation and it was obviously impossible for us to order any other way) and the bartender replied back to her with something the two of them laughed about. Fun. Not only are they out of the good stuff, the bartender has a bit of an attitude as well.

Then when he told us our total we paid. Separately. Because we wanted to order separately but the guy just didn't want to listen to us. Or help us much for that matter. After I gave him my money I told the ladies I was going to sit down to wait for my next service. I gave him more than the total so he could keep the change as a tip. My friend came back and gave me my change explaining that if he was going to have that hard of a time helping us and if he was going to share rude comments about us with his customer then he wasn't too worth of a tip. I felt bad for a split second (I have never not given a tip before...) and than went on chatting with the girls I had met in between all of this.

We chatted a bit and sipped our wine before it was my turn to get some airbrushed color on my eyes (again by The Beauty Bar). After my makeup was done I got to know a few of the gals who sat down with us. And they ended up being part of a Mommy Blogging group that I joined online. How awesome! I got to meet them anyway. For a few more pictures of the event check out Laura's post on the event here. After a bit I was starting to get hungry so we braved the bar again to order some food. And we thought we were in luck. The other bartender was coming over to help us. Then he gave us a menu and left. Leaving our favorite bartender to help us again. And there was no denying the disdain in his voice. He did not care for us at all. What fabulous service!

As the girls and I chatted we indulged in some yummy focaccia bread with different fun toppings. The last service I received was an eyebrow shaping by the amazing Josue. Seriously... my brows haven't looked this good in a while. I have to come to him for all my eyebrow waxing needs in the future! I forgot how fun it is to look so put together. And if you head to The Beauty Bar make sure to ask for him! They're also having a happy hour event in August that I'll post more info for soon.

So to make a long story short I am truly grateful and thankful to Spaphile for putting on this great event! I really needed a night out with the girls to relax and indulge in a bit of adult conversation. And while I wish I had better things to say about the service at 57 Degrees, the wine and food were great.

Daddy's Birthday - A Night of Entertainment {Restaurant Review}

It was Joseph's birthday yesterday and we wanted to celebrate! Joseph decided he wanted to try out Benihana for dinner. I knew from a friend that if you signed up for their birthday club you got a free meal. I signed up for my birthday but forgot and we didn't end up going. After our fun night last night I'll definitely be using it next year!

After we were done ordering our food E got festive and turned his menu into a hat with Daddy's help. He wanted to be just like the little boy who was also sitting at our table.

This is E's "mmmm" face. He was eating my soup and saying "mmmmm" as he slurped it down. I find it hilarious that he closes his eyes to enjoy his food when he likes it.

See what I told you? Closed eyes as he's sipping the soup. Such a funny boy! But he ate 1/2 of mine and 1/2 of Daddy's so we weren't going to say anything.

We had fun watching the chef make our meal. I think E liked watching him crack eggs the best. He loves cracking eggs and "helping" when we cook or bake.

Do you see what he formed the veggies and rice into? It's Pacman! I wasn't fast enough with the camera but the chef formed the rice into a Pacman and made it look like he was eating the vegetables just like the game.

And his second creation with the rice was non other than Mickey himself. He even made Mickey talk to us. Talk about creativity with food!

We just ordered the chicken fried rice for E because we knew he wouldn't finish a whole plate of anything. He loved it and ate a big portion of it. Daddy and I, of course, split the rest to indulge a little since we stuck with the steamed rice (it's lower in points!).

As he was eating his rice he was continuously saying "yumyumyumyum...mmmmm". He definitely let us know he was enjoying his dinner.

Our food being cooked up. Chicken for me, fillet for Joseph and veggies for both of us.

Now normally you start with shrimp as an appetizer but one person from the other family sitting with us was allergic so the chef waited till the end to prepare the shrimp. After he cut the tails off he flipped them into his coat pocket with his spatula. It was pretty fun to watch. He even got one into his hat.

Miss M was jealous of all of our yummy food and decided to start noming on Daddy's plate. She seriously had her mouth on the rim and was happy as a clam. Daddy didn't even notice at first.

After we were done with dinner they cleaned up. I was definitely impressed with the stacking skills of this server! Look at all of those dishes and how well he balanced everything.

We of course sang Happy Birthday and Daddy got a yummy sundae. By this time in our dinner E only wanted to cuddle with me and was on my lap. However as soon as I mentioned sharing Daddy's ice cream he was off my lap and back in his high chair! Tired, nope, not too tired for ice cream.

As you can tell from the pictures we really loved our night at Benihana and will definitely go again. The birthday club discount was definitely worth it! Maybe we'll try lunch next time...

Birthday Celebration - Hob Nob Hill {Breakfast Review}

We just went to Hob Nob Hill for breakfast this morning in celebration of my birthday and I was definitely over impressed with the service we received. We used a voucher we bought off of Sign On San Diego's daily deal website ($15 for $30 worth of food) to try it out but will definitely be back for more.

Our waitress, Stacy, was quick to bring our drinks and take our order. She even brought some complimentary apple muffins to the table since she knew from her experience (and from being a mom herself) that children get a bit restless if they aren't fed right away). Shortly after that our food arrived. We were pleased with the speedy service and the quality of the food.

My one problem was with the special I got for breakfast - a Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries and side of sausage. I assumed that fresh strawberries meant plain cut up strawberries on top of the waffle. But my strawberries had a sugary glaze on them. Being on WW I was already splurging as it was on the waffle... I didn't need extra glaze to add to the calorie content of my breakfast! But it was amazingly good. The waffle light and fluffy and the strawberries were fresh. Joseph enjoyed his waffle special with eggs and bacon (well... he didn't make a peep the whole time he was eating and continued to polish off his plate so I'm assuming all was good).

E enjoyed his breakfast as well. Kids get their choice of eggs, pancakes, or french toast and the meals come with a side of applesauce or potatoes, toast or muffin, and bacon or sausage. We also got a nice side of fruit for him. And being a picky two year old we assumed he'd hardly touch his food. We were wrong. He ate at least 1/2 of everything on the plate!

And on top of the great service throughout our meal, at the end of the meal we asked what the cost of a cookie was since our son saw the cookies on display when we first arrived. Her response was that they were free for adorable little kids and she grabbed one right away for my son. We left a large tip to let her know we appreciated her going above and beyond our expectations.

Can't wait to try out lunch and dinner!

Restaurant Rave: Kid Friendly Claim Jumper

So I have to say... we never really think of Claim Jumper when we think of restaurants to go to when we go out. We usually stick with our usuals or try something local and different but we had a few gift cards (thanks Mom!) to use up and I really didn't want to cook on Friday. So we headed out to the closest one and called ahead expecting a wait. We left the house at 6:15pm, got "reservations" at 7pm by calling and got to the restaurant at 6:30. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes but they were quoting 25-30 minutes to those coming in as we were without reservations.

They had checkers and chess in the lobby area to play so when a spot opened up at the chess table we took it. E was quite happy playing with the pawns, knights, kings & queens. It definitely kept him entertained while we waited.

When we were shown our table the first thing I noticed was that they put down a sticky placemat, oyster crackers & crayons with the kids menu and had already brought over a high chair. I didn't expect that. AND they sat us at a rather large booth. They must know a thing or two about having small children!

Our waiter came over right away and took our drink order. And than I headed to the salad bar to grab a salad for me and munchies for E to keep him occupied. By the time I got back and we decided on what we were going to get the waiter was there ready to take our order. And after we ordered E's meal he immediately asked if we wanted him to bring it out as soon as it was ready instead of waiting to bring it out with our meals. I was impressed :)

So E's meal came out and it was massive! We ordered the mini corn dogs with a side of seasonal veggies & fries. I was able to get a small plate to put two cut up corn dogs, some cut up carrots & zucchini and a few fries for him to pick at. And than I finished my salad and a few of his veggies (they were REALLY good!).

Our meals came out shortly after and of course were huge. Joseph got the tri-tip with corn & veggies and I got the BBQ pork sliders w/ fries. I shared my fries, he shared his veggies and the three of us were happy. Until E started to hit his melting point. The waiter was quick to bring the check and boxes and even ran back to get some nut-free toppings for Joseph's sundae (that we took home).

So all in all the food was good but the catering to kids is what I'd come back for. If we got another gift card :)

Food Rave: O'Brothers

Joseph had jury duty today downtown so when E woke up from his nap we headed to the mall to meet him for lunch. He had spotted a new place we hadn't tried that had organic burgers that sounded pretty good so we headed over.

We walked into O'Brothers at about 12:45 looked at the menu and quickly placed our orders (you order ahead and than sit down... perfect for a quick lunch). Joseph got the hamburger with a side salad and I got the western burger with fries. We had planned on sharing both sides with each other and E. I was impressed with the simple menu and fair prices.

The burgers came out looking awesome. Mine was huge! Two big onion rings on top of a juicy, perfectly seasoned burger with some melted cheese and topped with a tangy bbq sauce. I wasn't excited about the taste of the bbq sauce at first when I tried an onion ring seperately from the burger but once I tried everything together it worked. I think it might have been too tangy for my taste but everything else mellowed it out in the end.

Joseph's burger looked pretty tasty too and E, to our surprise, even took a few bites. The salad looked awesome. It was mixed greens topped with feta and diced tomatoes with a great tasting ranch dressing. And the fries... YUM! Garlic fries!! And they served it with what seemed to be a ranch dipping sauce. E definitely ate his fair share of these.

The woman who took our order was kind enough to bring us a high chair for E and was very pleasant throughout our meal. She refilled Joseph's drink and was overall very attentive.

As we were enjoying our meal I noticed Joseph glancing back over to the registers every now and again. He seemed a bit puzzled. Than he said... do those two look familiar to you at all? I turn around and look. There were two guys who looked very familiar. Joseph than said, "Don't they look like Cowlings? Craig and... um... Derek?" I had to agree. When I saw Craig I wasn't too sure since I had only seen pictures of him but when I saw Derek I knew they had to be Cowlings. I really wanted to ask the waitress what their last names were but Joseph stopped me :)

Now if you don't work where we work you probably wouldn't know who these guys are but their grandfather founded the company we work for and his father owned it up until about 8 years ago when the company was sold. So it was pretty crazy to see them at a burger place downtown.

As we were finishing up Craig came over and asked how our meal was. We said it was great and headed out to walk Joseph to the Justice building.

All in all I'm sure we'll stop by again if we're in the area and need a place to eat. Although I'm always tempted to go down the street to Sushi Deli :) Too bad Joseph doesn't like sushi.
