Why Yes, My Son Is In Gymnastics {Creating Healthy Children}

This summer was a fun, and busy, one. We spend most of our time playing wiht our friends, exploring San Diego, and picking up a few new skills.

My son spent one day a week learning a few awesome moves in his gymnastics class. I was impressed and excited to see how quickly he picked up what the teacher showed him. And he had an amazing teacher!

What I wasn't expecting was the reaction I received from others when I told them he was in gymnastics. Now, I'm not talking about my friends or family members, but people I met at the park, or at a restaurant (don't ask me how we got on the subject... the lady sitting next to us was VERY nosy), or at the doctor's office.

While most people would simply say, "Oh, how fun!" others reacted with a distasteful, "Why?!"

Well... why not?

And that's what I'd respond with. Gymnastics is a great way, for boys and girls, to learn the basics of balancing, core strength, motor skills, and flexibility. And I love that my son can now build on these skills as he grows and learns new ones. Not to mention the fact that he was part of a social circle that helped promote physical activity instead of at home on the couch watching cartoons.

Doing an awesome somersault on his own

Here are a few ways that gymnastics skills can help aid in healthy development of kids:

Core Strength and Exercise
Exercise and proper training through gymnastics have a positive effect on a child’s cardiopulmonary/cardio respiratory status and bone mineral density, helping to reduce the risk of serious illnesses in adulthood, such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes. It can also reduce the chances of childhood obesity by aiding in body composition and the loss of body fat (the healthy way!).

Motor Skills
Gymnastics helps children build a range of motor and coordination skills, and assists in developing a good sense of body awareness.

A young child in gymnastics will learn how to use different parts of their body in difference ways. By participating in gymnastics children have more body awareness, control, and coordination, which can be beneficial to other physical activities, sports, and in everyday life.

Flexibility
Stretching exercises help improve flexibility, allowing muscles and joints to bend and move easily through their full range of motion as your children grow. Kids look for opportunities every day to stretch when they try to get a toy just out of reach, take off their shoes, or do a somersault.

By becoming more flexible, children are less likely to get injured while playing and can perform better at certain tasks and sports. Stretching and improving flexibility can also help alleviate growing pains.

Don't have time (or the budget) for gymnastics? You can encourage core strength in your kids through fun games and activities. Take a look at this awesome publication from USAGym I found for a few great ideas! I'll be using a few of them with the kids since my son started preschool and our busy schedule can no long allow for gymnastics classes.

Remember to be a role model for your child. If you are active, your child will be active. So get up, head outside, and start playing!

GrossOlympics at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

GrossOlympics to be held on July 7, 2012,
at the Fleet!
The Thrill of ICK-tory... the Agony of Smelly Feet!

I don't know about your kids but mine are obsessed with all things icky and gross. From boogers to gas to smelly odors, they absolutely love pointing out the obvious (and very loudly!). So when we saw what was coming up at the local science center we knew we had to get in on the action, if only from the sidelines.

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the Global Association of Gross and Messy Education (GAG-ME) invites children 6-14 to participate in the GrossOlympics, to be held on July 7, 2012 in celebration of the newest hands-on science exhibition, “Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body.”

See who reigns supreme with the smelliest sneakers, loudest burp, and longest spitting distance. Or join a team relay competing to move a tennis ball through an “intestinal” tube the quickest. Fun prizes will be awarded to contest winners. Participants may sign up on the day of the event only, one hour prior to each contest. Space is limited so early arrival is recommended. Participation is included with gallery admission.

If your child is anything like mine and you're in the San Diego area you have to come check out the Gross Olympics! They're not to be missed. Here's the schedule for the upcoming games. Which contest are you most looking forward to?

Gross Olympics Schedule for July 7th at Balboa Park:
  • 10 AM: Contest Registration Opens
  • 11 AM: Loudest Burp Contest
  • 12 PM: Pit Spitting Contest
  • 1 PM: Smelly Sneaker Contest
  • 2 PM: Peristaltic Push Relay
Grossology is only at the Fleet through January 1, 2013.

And since you'll already be at the Fleet for Grossology you'll have to check out Family Science Saturdays! We have yet to check out this fun event but will be on the 7th to tinker around in the Tinkering Studio.

We will be heading over to check out the festivities with our playgroup and cannot wait to participate in the fun!

Will we see you there?

“Grossology” is made possible, in part, by a generous grant from Takeda California, a subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited.

Jumping for Joy with @Chobani and @KidsFestSD #NaBloPoMo

Watching the joy in my children's faces as they enjoy awesome activities makes me jump for joy. Being able to take them to a place that's filled with discovery, adventure, and fun is one of the best parts about being a parent.

And being in San Diego we're quite blessed to have many opportunities to experience joy with our kids. The weather, the activities, and the events we have around town just can't be beat. This past weekend we had the pleasure of attending KidFest San Diego and boy did we have some fun!

Thanks to Chobani and the Chobani Champions bus I was able to pass on tickets to KidsFest to the families of my playgroup. Since we had already won a family 4-pack of tickets from Stacey of San Diego Bargain Mama we didn't need a set, but we wanted our friends to join in on the fun with us!

The first stop we hit when we got to the event was the Chobani Champions bus to endulge in full size samples of the new Chobani Champions. My daughter chose the banana honey, I had some chocolate and vanilla, my husband enjoyed the orangecicle and my son devoured the very berry. Our friends also enjoyed their samples as well. My friend Kari, from Mommy To Elodie, and her family were there to enjoy most of the event with us. And we were so glad they did!

We hula hooped courtesy of SitterCity. Kari showed the kids how to do it and got quite into it. She even had to take off her sweater to get more speed. My son absolutely loved trying it out and Elodie got quite into the action as well.

We built castles with The Village Blocksmith. These blocks were absolutely stunning! Each set builds a small castle that would make any kid excited. I'm definitely putting this on my wish list for Christmas this year. If your kids love building I highly suggest taking a look at his website.

We made awesome strawberry mice courtesy of Muffin Tin Mom. We took a strawberry, some chocolate chips, almond slivers and twizlers and created these adorable little forest creatures. I don't know what it was but as soon as my daughter saw the little mice she decided she wanted to devour every single one. I had to keep a few set aside for my husband and son to enjoy as well. We'll definitely be making these again! We love all of the wonderful ideas we get from Muffin Tin Mom.

We ate yummy food from the food trucks! I got a burger and tater tots from Recess to share. The kids had never tasted tater tots before (except for the sweet potato ones we attempted to make in the oven... not good!) and love them. Lucky for me and my diet they ate all but one. I enjoyed my delicious cheeseburger with grilled onions.

Kari got lucky and scored big with the breakfast burrito she ordered from Delicioso. This bad boy was only $5 and was on the kids menu! Can you believe it? She thought she was going to get something half the size and was pleasantly surprised.

And we got messy and made mud pies and pinatas! The kids were given sand, water, and all the tools needed to make mud pies. They had a blast doing what they know best... making messes! They also were able to decorate a pinata filled with fun goodies from CircleBuzz. These were quite the hit and the kids used all of their creative juices to make theirs unique.

All of this fun and more lead to a very joyful family day. We enjoyed family, friends, food, and fun! How could we not want to jump for joy after all of that? I definitely will be making my way to KidsFest San Diego next year and will hopefully be bringing along more friends!

Did you make it down this year? What was your favorite part of the event?

What makes you jump for joy?

Picking Strawberries {San Diego Family Fun}

The one activity I've been dying to do with my family is go strawberry picking. I've said year after year that we were going to do it and then just didn't follow through. So for Mother's Day my husband asked if I wanted to take the kids up to the strawberry fields to go strawberry picking. And I quickly said yes!

We made our way up the 5 freeway towards Carlsbad and just stopped at the first U-Pick Strawberries sign we found. We didn't do much research beforehand that I know of other than to find out how much it was so we had enough cash on hand.

When we got there we parked, paid for our small bucket. Then after a quick run down of the rules we made our way to the strawberry plants to get picking.

The kids quickly jumped on board and started picking and eating like crazy. Until my husband noticed the moldy strawberries next to the ones the kids just ate and picked. So we became the pointers for the kids and showed them which ones to pick.

My son was quite excited about the whole "eat as many as you'd like" and quickly had a ring of red around his lips and on his fingers. I highly recommend bringing baby wipes with you as you pick the strawberries!

After traipsing up and down just about every row, the kids were too exhausted to walk back to the car alone. So my husband scooped them up and carried them. He quickly learned why the owners recommend wearing old shoes after putting the kids down at the car... his shirt and pants were not only covered in strawberries but caked with muddy dirt as well. The sign of any great adventure!

So if you are interested in picking some strawberries this season I highly suggest that you check out where your local U-Pick strawberry farms are. They're great fun for kids and adults alike! Next year we'll definitely be checking out the other strawberry fields around town.

Routines {Our Favorite Friday Hangouts}

Every Friday my son gets dropped off at his great aunt's house and my daughter and I have a little one on one time. It's a great day to catch up on the weeks house cleaning or work that I hadn't yet had the time to finish. But we also get to go out and enjoy ourselves for a bit in the mornings after we do drop off.

One thing I love about Fridays is our standing play date. Without fail, just about every other week, we end up heading to story time at The Yellow Book Road after dropping off Brother. Then we head over to Con Pane with friends to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and something to nibble on.

The Yellow Book Road features a new theme every week and they always include a few books geared to children under two as well as some fun music they play and dance to that go along with the theme. My daughter loves getting her groove on with the other kids.

Last week the theme was kittens. And they sang Soft Kitty. For any Big Bang Theory lovers out there I'm sure you're now singing it to yourself.

After the quick 30 minute story time we make our way across the street to indulge a bit in pastry (my one major weakness). I so look forward to this every week. It's like a little treat to myself.

Sure, some mamas love going out and getting pampered or head out to happy hour for a margarita on the rocks or watermelon martini. I wait all week for a brioche twist, a piece of delicious buttery bread with nuts and chocolate folded inside. And oh my is it amazing.

Paired with a cup of coffee and it's my breakfast and lunch all in one.

There are also delicious cookies, scones, and breads to choose from. And their sandwiches are filling and unique. One of my favorite sandwiches is their Turkey Cobb. Turkey breast, avocado, bacon, and gorgonzola cheese (that I usually omit and sub brie for) with crisp lettuce and tomatoes atop a fresh rosemary & olive oil bread. I order a 1/2 sandwich and it's still enough food to feed two!

Once we let our food settle we head over to the park to get some more energy out of the kids before heading back home for nap time. Watching my daughter socialize without her big brother is quite fun. She definitely has a big personality and it shows when she plays with her friends.

The best part about our Friday morning playdate is the fact that it's so casual. If we wake up too late or my son doesn't get dropped off at his great aunt's house in time we can just skip the storytime and go straight to brunch. And if we skip brunch... well then I just pop in and grab my order to go and than take a little stroll to the NTC park for some fun in the sun.

And even if a friend or two cannot make it, no big deal! There are plenty of other kids and mamas at all locations for my daughter to socialize with. Plus we like to get all of our shopping done after playtime since it's right next to a Trader Joe's and Vons.

So if your local and free Fridays and have a little one come on out to The Yellow Book Road for story time. It's a fun, relaxing morning that's perfect for moms and kids alike.

Do you have any weekly routines? A standing play date somewhere?

Learning from The Lorax

Last weekend we had the opportunity to go see The Lorax. I won tickets from Mel, A Dramatic Mommy's blog and we headed out for our morning of fun last Saturday. Before winning I was already planning on taking the kids to see this movie. Not only do we love Dr. Seuss in this family but we also love the story of the Lorax. My nephew even dressed up as The Onceler two years ago for Halloween.

So when we started seeing previews for the movie and reading about it on various blogs (like on Mary and Mel's blogs) I knew we had to find out when it came out and when we could see it.

We aren't big on going to check out a movie the weekend it opens. We don't like taking the kids to crowded theaters because, well, they're 1 and 3 and they usually aren't really good about staying in one spot or being quiet throughout the whole movie. So we were planning for our usual wait two weeks after it comes out, early Sunday morning or afternoon showing and were considering bringing my nephew since he's such a fan of the book. Well, as you already know, we didn't end up waiting to see this movie and I'm so glad we didn't!

This was the first 3-D showing that my son has actually sat through, with his glasses on, the whole time! And he was excited, interested and talked about the movie with us afterward. The meaning behind the movie really hit home and I was so happy to have a storyline that went hand in hand with what I'm trying to teach the kids. The Lorax "speaks for the trees" and protects the forest. When the Onceler comes into town he threatens to destroy the forest and with that, everything that lives in there. Sound familiar?

After watching the movie, my son asked if we could plant more plants in our (overcrowded) garden. I know he's taking the message home. He's three. By being cautious of our footprint on the earth, making greener choices and re-planting what we cut down we're sure to enjoy this planet a bit longer.

If the youth of today pick up this message sooner than we did then maybe we'll be in a better place in 20+ years. If not, we might get stuck in Thneed-ville. What a scary thought!

If you're interested in making more of your viewing of The Lorax consider throwing a pre-screening party or making some fun and unique Lorax and Dr. Seuss crafts with the kids like Tonya Staab did. To make the outing even more special make a family day out of it. Plan breakfast before or lunch after and talk with your kids about the movie and what they learned. I was quite interested to hear what my son had to say when we enjoyed some Panera after the movie. He really learned a lot and I wasn't expecting some of the things he took in.

"Unless we plant more trees, mama, they might all disappear!" Was what he said to me as we talked about the movie and ate our sandwiches.
