Cloth Diapering

I don't know if I ever confirmed or not on here that I was cloth diapering but I am. And to tell you the truth... I love it! There are many great benefits to it but the one thing I love is that when I change my son and his diaper is soaked I feel his skin and it's still dry. No moisture stays on his skin. And you know what this means... less of a chance for diaper rash! Yay for no diaper rash (hopefully... knock on wood). Another plus are the cute designs some of these diapers come in.

I already blogged about the Happy Heinys diapers I purchased on www.mamabargains.com but I have yet to blog about the ones I've gotten since then. My whole "stash" as they call it on the eco-friendly board I visit consists of prefolds, pocket diapers, fitted diapers and a few all-in-ones.

I prefer to use the prefolds during the day when we're at home since they're the simplest. When we're out and about I use Thirsties fab fitted and Kissaluvs with a Thirsties cover (also use this cover with the prefolds). I have to say that the Thirsties covers will hold ANYTHING in :) I also have one XS Thirsties AIO (All In One) and one XS BumGenius (BG) AIO that I occasionally use when we're out but Ethan's starting to grow out of his XS sizes and into his smalls!

So now we're incorporating the small BG AIOs and small Happy Heinys. The great thing about an AIO is that you don't need a cover. That's why I also bought a few one size (OS) BG AIOs. (Is that enough acronyms for you?) I haven't been able to use the OSs yet because I've heard they leak a bit until the baby is ~12 pounds and I don't think Ethan's quite there (almost!). But the reason for the OS is that they grow with the kid lasting from now till potty training.

The newest edition to my stash is a B4 (BuBuBeBe) OS diaper. From what I hear these are the "it" diapers to use at night because they're super absorbant. Currently we're using our BG AIOs at night with one microfiber insert and they hold up for 5-7 hours at a time! It's wonderful. I usually put Ethan in a nighttime diaper at about 7-8pm before he goes to bed and don't change him until 1-3pm depending on when he gets up to eat (he eats at around 10-11pm too but basically sleeps through the feeding). Joseph than changes him when he gets up at 6:30-7am and puts him in a prefold. The prefolds only hold for about 2-3 hours. The B4 should last the whole night! Or so I'm told... so excited to try it.

So as you can see from my rambling I am loving the cloth diapers! Not only is it easy (washing is not a problem, one cold wash, one hot wash, low dry or line dry... and line drying also works as a stain remover because the sun takes out the stains). I use Crunchy Clean diaper detergent and love it because of the many different scents you can choose from. Currently we're using Baby Bee Clean but I want to try a few out there... including Monkey Farts :) The best part about cloth diapering? No, not the eco-friendly stuff or the money savings... it's buying the cute diapers! You can definitely get hooked.

A great thing about this cloth diaper thing is the community around it. You find so many helpful mamas who want you to succeed. If I have a question or need help with something there's always a website or message board to ask. And my questions are answered by knowledgable cloth diapering mamas who have been doing it a lot longer than me. And they always tell you about the great deals! There's one website that's even offering a cloth diaper giveaway! How cool is that?

So I end this post by saying if you have even had an inkling that you want to cloth diaper your little one you should definitely try it! There's even trials that you can buy so you get a variety of diapers to try out. If you like it... yay! You can get started and buy a few more diapers to complete your stash. If you don't? You're out $10. Not that big of a deal :)

I have a question about the clothe diapers... What do you do with the dirty ones when you're out? Do you have a special baggie for them? Just curious :-)

I have a really cute small wet bag that I throw them in. I'll take a picture and blog about it when it's out of the dryer :)
