Top 5 Tips for Road Trips with Young Kids {#CulturelleKids Sponsored Post}

This summer has been full of fun memories for our family. From days at the beach, to drives up to Disneyland, to a road trip to Mammoth Mountain and Yosemite, we've seen quite a bit of excitement. But being prepared for traveling with kids in the car has been something we've worked on.

Since my son is newly potty trained the one thing we worried about when on the road with him is that he'd have to go #2 and not be able to tell us until we were too late and he got out of the car. Also, with the long 6 hour ride to Mammoth Mountain, we worried about how many stops we really needed to make and how many stops were just "fun" stops.

In preparation of our trip we decided to bit of research to make sure that we had a successful journey with two young children in the back seat. Since we've made this trek once before with our son at 18 months we kind of had an idea about what to expect. In an effort to make our next trip successful we wrote down a few things that helped us along the way.

Here are a few ways to keep your road trip fun and successful with young children:

1. Make sure to pack a potty -

We simply placed our Joovy Loo in the back of the car. That way if we needed to stop and there wasn't a place to do so, we could just use the back of the station wagon. This helped us a lot when my son was working on things and just needed to sit on something other than his car seat to help him along.

It also gave us peace of mind when on long stretches of road. We didn't have to worry about not being able to find a sanitary place to stop (my husband isn't as adventurous as I am and doesn't approve of relieving yourself on the side of the road... just wait till we go camping!).

2. Plan out frequent stops -

This won't just give your child a chance to "try" but it will also give them a chance to stretch their legs and get a little energy out. By planning out where your next stop will be you might be able to quickly answer your children when they ask how long it will be until you arrive at your next stop.

You can also use pre-planned stops as points for conversation. By letting your children know what the next stop is, or giving hints to where your heading, you might be able to create a sense of excitement and adventure as you make your way through the trip.

We had fun picking out where we stopped and made sure to mix restaurants in with quick pit stops at gas stations. I also allowed the kids to pick out one "surprise" at each stop to make it more interesting to them as well.

3. Create a fun pack filled with games and activities -

By creating a fun pack filled with new-to-you toys, activities focused on the age level of your child, and games the children can play in the car you can create distractions and, hopefully, reduce the amount of, "Are we there yet?" questions from the back seat.

Figure out some fun games you want to play with your child on the road. Consider simple ideas like finding an object of a certain color, finding a certain letter of the alphabet, or, depending on where your driving, looking out for different animals! By making the ride fun and entertaining itself, your child will be less likely to complain about being in the car and more excited.

We brought our fun activity backpack and filled it with the following:

4. Find a great local attraction to visit -

Take a look at a map and find a great middle point between your home and your destination. Are there any fun, quirky activities you can stop and do in between? Maybe a museum or a historical monument. By maping out a spot or two on the way to your destination you can talk with your children about what you might see, what they would like to do, and how you will spend your time at the next spot.

You can also use these stops as teaching opportunities. By learning a bit about the spot beforehand you can tell your child about the history behind the attraction as well as why it's such an interesting stop on your journey.

5. Continue You Probiotic Suppliments -

When your child is in a new environment or has a new routine, sometimes it's natural to hold things in. I know a few children who, when on vacation, will refuse to go #2 in a new place (as well as a few adults!). By continuing to offer your child a probiotic supplement like Culturelle, you can make it easier for your child to feel comfortable going when on the go.

Culturelle boosts digestive health and helps reduce occasional digestive upset. his will also help provide ongoing maintenance for a healthy digestive tract. And we all know how much happier we are when we're regular! Same goes for our kids.

There are two awesome varieties of Culturelle available for young children depending on their age. My son enjoys the powder form that is easily added to his water or juice. It has no taste and dissolves quickly. By continuing to offer it to him throughout our trip we were able to successfully continue our potty training success while on our vacation!

Do you have any tips for a successful road trip with young kids?

Organic Toddler Bathtime with Dolphin Organics

What I put on my children and what I bathe them with is something I think about and research. From lotions, to sunscreens, to bath products like soap and shampoo; anything that touches my child's skin is scrutinized. Sometimes this can be difficult. How do I know what is, and isn't, good for my children's skin. Recently it came to light that the products I was using on children had changed ingredients without any acknowledgement so I decided to make the switch to a new brand.

I heard about Dolphin Organics last August at BlogHer'11. They were at the Expo of the conference and were very helpful in explaining what ingredients they used and how important it was to them to be as transparent as possible with the ingredients they used. They wanted their customers to KNOW that they cared about what they put into each product they sold.

Since my family does a bit of traveling in the summer I thought that a Deluxe Travel Set in simply citrus would be the best way to travel with the kids and know that their baths would be toxic free.

An added bonus is that this travel set not only comes with shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath, and lotion; but it also contained sunscreen as well! How awesome is that for traveling with kids? Plus it came in a handy storage bag for easy portability.

We absolutely love the variety of products Dolphin Organics has to offer and their concern for our children's well being. The amazing thought and consideration put into each ingredient and product shows. Just speaking with the folks at Dolphin Organics made me feel at ease with usign these products on my children.

As we enjoy the gorgeous weather this summer we'll be using our Dolphin Orgnanics sunscreen on the children daily whether we're at the beach, the pool, the zoo, or any other place outside in sunny San Diego or on vacation.

Head on over to the Dolphin Organics website to check out what else they have to offer!

My Biggest Fear Planning for #BlogHer12

I'm a pretty social person.

I get along with a wide variety of personalities and have no problem being alone or walking around in numbers. I think it has something to do with my confidence and my own personality.

But the one thing I'm always super conscious about is the fact that I'm a lactating mama. And some other mamas might not be as understanding when it comes to the fact that I, personally, want to nurse my daughter for as long as I can. OR as long as she wants to.

So when I started to plan for BlogHer'12 in NYC (my FIRST trip away from the family) I realized I'd have to either bring a pump with me or figure out the best way to hand-express my milk to keep my supply going since I wouldn't be bringing my nursling.

The one fear I had was my roomate having an issue with a moo-machine in the room and breast milk storage in the fridge.

Last year there was a lactation lounge at the conference with milk donation set up but I haven't seen any news of one at this year's event. So I am not sure if milk donations are being arranged or not; I'd rather bag my milk and see if I could give it to someone instead of dumping it down the drain.

Liquid gold and all.

The whole time I've been making my check list for things to pack, outfits to wear, shoes to bring I've had this nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me to talk to the roomie about my lactation issues.

The miracle of coincidence and timing is awesome though.

Because my fears were for naught.

And how'd I find this out? I was just chatting about being nervous about leaving the family alone for so long for the first time and she agreed then mentioned the need for a pump. Relief!

Turns out my roomate is also still nursing her daughter and will be bringing along her pump as well! Talk about things working out perfectly, right? I mean, we aren't going to have a pumping party or anything but at least I'm rooming with someone who "gets it," you know?

So if there's something on your mind just speak up! More likely than not, those who you talk to will understand and be there to support you!

Worried your roomie is going to walk in on your pumping? Pick up some of these awesome door hangers I found! I so wish I had these when I pumped at work...

The Perfect Toddler Travel Companion {@JoovyOO Foocot Review}

Since we purchased our first set of Disneyland Annual Passes years back, we've been increasing our stays in hotels up on Anaheim every year. Adding kids to the mix just makes us a bit too tired to either wake up early and drive the 1.5 hours or stay till closing and drive home.

We've remedied this by mastering the art of fanagling an online deal for a hotel that usually ends up costing us $50-75 a night. Suffice it to say, we stay at hotels at least 6 times a year with the kids. And sometimes a set of doubles or a king bed just isn't enough.

So when we saw the Joovy Foocot Child Cot we knew we had our solution for beds for the kids during our hotel stays.

The Joovy Foocot is a very durable and easy to use child's cot that sets up and breaks down with little trouble at all. It even comes with it's own fitted sheet and carrying case!

It supports a child up to 48 inches tall or 75 pounds and is made of a sturdy steel frame with top grade 600D nylon fabric.

When you're done with the Foocot you simply fold it up and put it in the carrying case. When folded, it's small enough to store in your trunk, in closets, or even under beds! The compact size of the folded Foocot will take little to no room at all with all of your other travel gear.

We recently stayed out on the town for the night in celebration of our 5 year wedding anniversary. And since my daughter is still a bit too young to leave alone, we had her join us after enjoying dinner together.

Having the option of letting her sleep in the foocot made her feel as if she had her own toddler bed similar to the one we have at home. And since it fit nicely on the side of our bed, if she needed us at all during the night she'd just climb up and join us.

This cot is not only great for travel but will be the perfect solution to sleep overs in the near future!

My son is already talking about having his cousin over for the night and since he's allergic to dogs we want to make sure we have a safe, dog free place for him to sleep (rather than right on the floor where there may be traces of dog hair even after we vacuum). The foocot is the perfect, simple solution to our problem!

And I'm sure we'll soon be purchasing the accompanying Foocot Quilted Mattress Pad to make longer trips more enjoyable for the kids. While the Foocot is not meant to provide a permanent place to stay, trips over a few nights might be a bit more comfy when using the Mattress Pad instead of just the Fitted Sheet.

If you're traveling anywhere this summer with little ones and are looking for a great solution to the roll out couch or sleeping bag on the floor, then I highly recommend checking out the Joovy Foocot Child Cot.

Versatile, durable, and very fun to use!
