Preparing for Halloween Fun with BuyCostumes
Can you believe that Halloween is just around the corner?
Sure, it isn't even September, but in order to be prepared for one of our favorite holidays we like to plan in advance. And that means scoping out the costumes early and purchasing them a few months in advance. Not only does that insure that we receive our costume in time, we also won't have to worry about the costumes our children want selling out.
When I started my Halloween costume shopping I went online. And the first place I looked was Buy Costumes, the web's most popular costume store.
My daughter is currently obsessed with all things lady bug. So it was a no-brainer to dress her up as one for Halloween. I searched for an age appropriate ladybug costume on the site and quickly found this adorable fluffy Baby Ladybug Costume for my daughter in an 18 month/2T.
Since it's still hot out we opted to let her model the costume off with nothing underneath. But she still wasn't happy after a few moments of being in the costume.
I totally blame a combination of the heat and the fact that she accidentally slammed a door on her head as we were getting her costume. Poor baby!
But the costume itself was adorable! And it fit perfectly. Since she's a petite 20 month old I wanted to make sure that the costume wouldn't be too large on her, and in two months I think that it'll fit perfectly! If not, I'm planning on purchasing a back up costume as well like the Little Pirate costume just in case she refuses to wear her antennas (you can never be too prepared with a fussy toddler on Halloween).
By the time we neared the end of our little photo shoot, my little lady bug was quite over the whole process! But that doesn't mean she didn't like the costume... she just didn't like it on her at the time! So I'm still holding out on the fact that she'll love her ladybug costume by Halloween-time. And if not, she can always wear it to her Ladybug Lemonade birthday party in December!

Cutest Sushi Roll Ever {The Wishing Elephant}
Some moms and dads would rather not attempt to DIY a costume for their kids. Whether it be a hectic schedule, lack of materials or they're just plain bad at crafts, it's ok! There is a way to have your kids look super adorable in a DIY costume with none of the super glue or felt flying around the house. A great place I like to look for DIY costumes is Etsy. Some of the Etsy stores I've stumbled upon have costumes that would be perfect for your little ones.
A few weeks ago a good friend, Heather, posted a link to The Wishing Elephant's Etsy store. The link went to a sushi roll costume and I knew it was the perfect idea for a great DIY costume. Now I don't have a lot of time on my hands but I was prepared to try and re-create this costume for a news segment we were invited to participate in for The Mama Mary Show and Fox 5 News. I was already making the dino costume for my son so what's another costume, right? But when I showed Mary the costume she contacted The Wishing Elephant and they surprised us by offering to send over a onesie in my daughter's size!

We were able to get the costume in time for the segment and as soon as we made it to the Fox 5 green room we put it on and were in awe of the cuteness! Everyone who saw Miss M fell in love with the costume and I'm pretty sure that she stole the show. At least she caught the eye of the news anchors! The costume was simple, well made and super comfy for any infant. I added a pair of neutral cream baby legs to protect Miss M's knees and a cute headband from Evi Luna Boutique to create the look you see above.
And not only does The Wishing Elephant have adorable costumes for Halloween, they have a whole array of cute onesies that range from adorable gnomes to the ever so popular Mario and Luigi from The Super Mario Brothers. I'm especially smitten with the bow tie onesie. If we ever had another little boy I'd have to purchase it for pictures (NO! I'm not pregnant!). Rawr Dinosaurs! {DIY Costume}
My son is obsessed with dinosaurs. He's loved them ever since he was introduced to Dinosaur Train on PBS Kids shortly before his second birthday. I thought it'd be fun to try and design a simple dinosaur costume for him to wear whenever he wanted around the house. I didn't want to spend too much money so I used simple materials I already had and some sponges I picked up on a recent shopping trip. I got the idea from Rookie Mom by doing a simple search for DIY Dino costumes and just adjusted it to fit a two year old. For his 3rd birthday I might attempt to make this Buddy the Dinosaur costume (the no-sew option)... maybe.
If you want to make your own DIY Dino/Dragon costume just follow these simple steps below.
What You'll Need:3-4 sponges (approx 4 1/2" long)
coordinating ribbon
hot glue gun
needle & thread
hooded sweater
matching sweatpants
What You Do:
Cut the sponge in half lengthwise (from A to B). Then cut the sponge again diagonally (from C to A and from D to A). You should have 4 semi-equal triangles.
Get out the ribbon and pull it out on a flat surface. Line up the sponge triangles right next to it so you can place them down right after you add the hot glue to the ribbon.
Apply a small line of hot glue on the ribbon and place the sponges longest side down on the glue. Press down to make sure the sponge adheres fully.
To guesstimate how long the spikes should be use your hooded sweater as a template. Once you get a good length (3 sponges were perfect for my 2.5 year old) cut the ribbon.
To attach the ribbon and sponges to the hoodie you can do a few things. The easiest would be to use safety pins to secure the spikes to the sweater. You can also use velcro, snaps, hot glue, tacky glue, etc to adhere the spikes. I chose to hand sew the spikes on since a. my son is pretty close to outgrowing this jacket and b. he'll be using it to play in, it won't be used just one time.
Sew the spikes at the end of each triangle (where a small amount of ribbon can be seen) with 2-3 stitches. Tie each off securely with a good knot and move on to the next gap in spikes. You should have a small tail dangling from the bottom of the hoodie. A great length to leave it at would be about knee to calf length on your child.
To complete the costume I added some green mittens on my son's hands and put large blue socks over his shoes. I was considering making some toenails out of yellow felt to add to the socks so he has a complete costume but I haven't done so just yet. We'll see!
